I went down to the South Rim to attend the Hikers Symposium and to do a work project for the GCHBA. Met Randy there a few days early for some day hiking.
Got to the South Rim on Oct 17 -- found Randy's van but no Randy. So I hiked down the Hermit Trail to Dripping Springs for a day hike. Found Randy later...he had gone down to Phantom Ranch for a beer...really!
The next day, Oct 18, Randy and I hiked down the Grandview Trail and explored the Cave of the Domes.
On Oct 19, we did a fun triple-trail dayhike. We took the early shuttle to the South Kaibab Trailhead, and hiked down to the tipoff. We then headed downstream on the Tonto Trail until we intersected with the Bright Angel trail, just below Indian Garden. We then hiked up and out the Bright Angel Trai. It was a good route, I'd never done it before.
Oct 20th was the second Grand Canyon Hiking Symposium. It was a day full of meeting other GC hiking nuts and slide show presentations. It was a great day.
From October 22 through 25, we joined other members of the GCHBA for a service project at Phantom Ranch.
We meet Gene Fowler, the trip organizer, and the other participants on the rim to get the remaining food that was not previously brought down by the mules.
We work a couple days, but we also have a free day to day hike. Randy and I chose to hike to Utah Flats and over to Phantom Creek for the day. I had never been there before, and it was a great day.
The food and friendship was great, and it gave us a good feeling to give a little something back to our beloved canyon.
